FIGHT CLUB: ESCAPE FROM DAILY LIFE

Fight Club is often mistaken to be a film only, however it is originally a novel by Chuck Palahniuk. The novel is considered to be a piece of ‘underground literature’, which is defined as the literature of rebels, dreamers, sinners, swearers and the ones who are not afraid to jump from a cliff. Yet, the characters perfectly respresent their roles; a nameless man who is a ‘‘slave to the Ikea nesting instinct’’, a woman who searches for pain in order to feel alive and an alter ego with bone and flesh.
The nameless narrator is trapped in the daily life’s boring occasions and the only way he finds as an escape is to join the group theraphys of the cancer patients where he can actually ‘see’ real pain. In the begining of the novel, he loses every material thing he owns. That loss of him leads to one of the main quotes of the novel: It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything. The total freedom gained after losing everything, starts to give courage to the character(Edward Norton). Then, with Tyler Durden, he starts the fight club. It is not different from the group theraphys actually, it is possible to say that every member is trying to hit the bottom and feel pain as much as they can, in order to feel alive.
The other major point of the novel is that, materialistic point of view is overrated. You are not the car you drive, you are not your bank account or your ‘‘grande latte’’. The perspective of Tyler Durden(Brad Pitt) is that all of the smartest men of the generation are waiting tables or pumping gases, they are slaves with white collars. This is a pure rebellion of the fight club members. They are fighting not for violence, for revenge. While they are punching their opponent they dream he is their boss, and when they are being beaten up, they think they are being redeemed. In addition, everything starts when the major character loses everything he owns, involving his ‘adorable’ apartment that he furnished meticulously. During the whole novel, the message of ‘‘Do not let the things you own, own you.’’ is being reflected, as an opposite point of view upon materialistic style of living.
With a shocking end, the novel has the success to break down the prejudice of it being a worthless novel about violence and masculinity. Personally speaking, in my opinion, since it is addressing the whole community, there is no reason for not having at least one common point with the characters. Fight Club is a successful underground literature novel, which can remind everyone of themselves while reading it.

london echos

Somehow he reminded me of angels.
I think its because he has that naive look on his face
his hair is a mess-
it seems like he has countless places to spend his evening in
but instead-
he prefers to stay in london underground,
playing harp
for the people who
dont even recognise his existence.
that,
only angels can do.

cliche new year wishes, i dont have them!

is it a sad thing that i dont have anything to wish for new year?
there's nothing i expect from 2010.
have you ever noticed that the countdown is often considered to be a big deal?
everyone wants to smile, when counting.
they wanna hug the loved ones as the seconds past.
but why?
why are we so frigthened about the way we enter the new year?
to be honest, i find it nonsense.
every single person on the same meridian as you
laughs, as though they are not bluffing
hugs, as though they are full of love
at the same moment.
at the same second.
but new year is more than that!
thats why one shouldnt care about the countdown
for everyday should be celebrated.
since a regular day is made up of a billion things to make you smile-if you are to see them of course-
how can you separate monday from tuesday ?
how cruel is that!
i cannot see any differences between the first of january and the seventh of august.
i, myself counted back this year and enjoyed it.
but yet, i dont expect anything different from the year 2010
than i expect from tomorrow.

My best friend, Reyhan.
Her laughter makes me happy.
Since the day we met.
